A pod with no button and no screen looks as if there is nothing to set. On the Geekvape Sonder range, whether the Sonder U, the Sonder Q or the Sonder Q2, retailer listings cover the battery and the airflow, then stop just when it is time to pick a liquid. This comparison sets the range’s pods side by side on four points, coil resistance, wattage range, the PG/VG ratio each one handles and the type of nicotine, before a verdict by vaping style.

Geekvape Sonder, the pod decides the liquid

The answer comes down to one rule, which holds for every Geekvape Sonder pod. The higher the resistance of the pod, the tighter the draw and the thinner and stronger the liquid can be. The lower the resistance, the more vapour it makes and the more it needs a balanced liquid, with no more than 50% vegetable glycerine.

In practice, the 1.2 ohm pod pairs with a high-PG or nic salt liquid. Supplied in the box, the 0.8 ohm pod takes a 50/50 liquid, freebase or nic salt. As for the 0.6 and 0.4 ohm pods, with their looser draw, they stay on 50/50 and nothing thicker. The Sonder U, with its own 0.7 ohm pod, sits between the two.

Every Geekvape Sonder pod side by side

The Sonder Q and Q2 use Geekvape’s Q pod, shared with other devices from the brand, while the Sonder U has its own U pod. The table keeps only the figures on which at least two retailers agree, drawn from the listings of five French retailers and one UK shop.

PodWattage rangeDraw listedLiquid suggested by retailers
Q 1.2 ohmFrom 8 WTight (MTL)High PG, nic salts
Q 0.8 ohm (in the box)12 to 18 WTight (MTL)50/50, nic salt or freebase
Q 0.6 ohm18 to 25 WRestricted direct lung (RDL)50/50
Q 0.4 ohm25 to 30 WLooser than the 0.6 ohm50/50
U 0.7 ohm16 to 19 WNot confirmedNot stated

For the 1.2 ohm pod, only the bottom of the range is confirmed by two sources, with one retailer putting the whole Q series between 8 and 30 W. The 0.4 ohm pod, rated for 25 to 30 W, needs the output of the Sonder Q2, which reaches 30 W.

Capacity matters too. The Sonder Q2 is often listed with a 3 ml side-fill Q pod, but in the UK refillable tanks and pods are limited to 2 ml. The 2 ml top-fill Q pod is the one that applies, and nicotine e-liquid is capped at 20 mg/ml in 10 ml bottles.

Same voltage, different power, what the maths shows

The wattage ranges hide a pattern that the listings never point out. The voltage across a coil is the square root of power multiplied by resistance. On the 0.8 ohm pod, 12 W works out at about 3.10 V and 18 W at about 3.79 V. On the 0.4 ohm pod, 25 to 30 W comes to 3.16 to 3.46 V.

In other words, every Geekvape Sonder pod runs within the same window of roughly 3.1 to 3.9 V. What changes from one pod to the next is the current, and therefore the power. Between 8 W on a 1.2 ohm pod and 30 W on a 0.4 ohm pod, the gap is a factor of 3.75.

With a well-fed wick, the amount of liquid vaporised generally follows the power. The liquid therefore has to move through the cotton faster as the resistance drops, and that is exactly what thicker vegetable glycerine slows down.

Which PG/VG ratio for a Geekvape Sonder pod

Propylene glycol keeps a liquid thin and carries flavour, while vegetable glycerine thickens it and makes the vapour denser. On a pod, the limit comes from the wick, which has to resaturate between puffs. Here is how that trade-off plays out pod by pod.

1.2 ohm, a tight draw and thinner liquids

This is the most restrained pod in the range, the one retailers link with the tightest draw and higher nicotine strengths. A high-PG or nic salt liquid suits it, since the low power vaporises little liquid per puff. The result puts flavour detail ahead of volume.

0.8 ohm, the stock pod on 50/50

Supplied with both the Sonder Q and the Q2, the 0.8 ohm pod stays mouth-to-lung. Retailers recommend a balanced 50/50 mix to spare the coil, and the Sonder Q user guide published by a retailer sets the limit at 50% VG. Freebase and nic salts both work, as in our TornadoLiq nic salt comparison, where one 50/50 base comes in both forms.

0.6 and 0.4 ohm, more vapour without going past 50% VG

These two pods open the draw to restricted direct lung and produce more vapour. The temptation is to fill them with a high-VG liquid to thicken the cloud even further.

That is the mistake to avoid, because a pod coil does not have the wicking of a sub-ohm tank and a thick liquid feeds it poorly. A 50/50 ratio remains the sensible limit, like the recipes in our Multi Freeze flavour guide.

Sonder U, a pod of its own

The Sonder U works with its own 2 ml U pods, 0.7 ohm in the stock version, rated between 16 and 19 W by two retailers. None of the listings checked gives a ratio for this model. Its wattage puts it between the 0.8 and 0.6 ohm Q pods, which points to staying at 50% VG or below here as well.

Nic salts or freebase depending on the draw

Ratio is not the only choice. The form of nicotine matters too, and it depends on how much vapour the pod makes with each puff.

On the tight-draw pods, 1.2 and 0.8 ohm, nic salts are the most common choice, because they give a softer throat hit at higher strengths. On the 0.6 and 0.4 ohm pods, the larger volume of vapour usually leads vapers to a lower strength. To see how strengths vary within a single range, our One Taste e-liquid comparison covers a case where each format has its own ceiling.

Verdict by vaping style

The right pod and liquid pairing depends less on the Sonder model than on the draw you want. Here is how we call it for the three most common styles.

Tight draw and precise flavour

The 1.2 ohm pod with a nic salt liquid is our pick. It uses the least liquid and puts flavour first. The stock 0.8 ohm pod is a sound alternative for anyone who prefers a slightly looser draw.

A balance of flavour and vapour

The 0.8 ohm pod on 50/50 wins here. It ships with the Sonder Q and Q2 and accepts the widest range of liquids, nic salt and freebase alike.

More vapour

The 0.6 ohm pod on a Sonder Q or Q2, with a 50/50 liquid at a moderate strength, is the most consistent option. The 0.4 ohm pod goes further but needs the 30 W of the Q2, and gains nothing from a higher-VG liquid.

FAQ

Five practical questions that retailer listings tend to leave open.

How do I fill a Sonder pod without flooding the coil?

Pour the liquid into the fill port, never down the central chimney, and stop below the maximum line. The 2 ml Q pod fills from the top, the U pod from the side under a tab. Then wait around ten minutes before the first puff so the cotton can soak.

How do I charge a Sonder?

Through a USB-C port on the edge of the device. Several retailers of the Sonder Q2 and Sonder U state that the cable is not included in the box. A standard USB-C phone cable usually does the job.

Can I replace just the coil on a Sonder?

No. The coil is sealed inside the pod, which is replaced as a whole once worn. A lasting burnt taste or fading flavour are the usual signs that it is time for a new one.

Does the Sonder Q2 take 2 ml Q pods?

Yes, the retailers checked state that the Q2 works with 2 ml Q pods as well as the 3 ml version. Power adjusts automatically to the resistance of the pod fitted.

How do I vape on a Sonder with no button?

Just draw on the mouthpiece, and the device fires on inhale. On the Sonder Q and Q2, a slider on the side sets the airflow, tighter when closed and looser when open.

Geekvape Sonder, choose the pod before the bottle

On an auto-draw pod, the liquid comes after the pod, not the other way round. The 1.2 ohm takes thin liquids and nic salts, the 0.8 ohm a 50/50 of either kind, the 0.6 and 0.4 ohm a 50/50 for more vapour, and the U pod follows the same VG limit.

Whichever Geekvape Sonder you use, the final result depends on that balance between coil, power and ratio, an equation we compare e-liquid by e-liquid across the site.
